Water damage can be stressful, but proper documentation is the key to ensuring your insurance claim is approved quickly and fairly. The better your records, the easier it will be to prove the extent of the damage and get the compensation you deserve. Here’s how to document water damage like a pro:

Take Clear Photos Immediately

As soon as you notice water damage start taking photos of:

  • The source of the water damage (such as a burst pipe, leaking appliance, roof leak, etc.)

  • Affected areas: walls, floors, ceilings and furniture

  • Structural damage or visible mold

  • Soggy belongings and valuables

  • The water level if flooding occurred (use a ruler or object for scale)

Pro Tip: Take before-and-after photos if possible. If you have past pictures of your home’s condition (like on Christmas morning or a party), this can serve as proof of the extent of the damage.

Record Videos for Extra Proof

Photos are essential, but if you grab video (just use your phone) this will provide even better context. Walk through your home, surveying the affected areas and capture video of:

  • The running water from the burst pipe or leak

  • Full scope of the damage, including any structural issues

  • The sound of dripping or rushing water (this is helpful for insurance adjusters)

Pro Tip: Try to narrate the video as you walk through the damage, explaining what happened and pointing out key details. Don't be shy. This is your time to show all the damage which will help in your insurance claim.

3. Save All Your Receipts

Keep a detailed record of:

  • Emergency repairs (ie: water extraction, emergency plumbing)

  • Hotel stays if the home is unlivable

  • Damaged personal items (with receipts if available)

Pro Tip: If you don’t have receipts, take photos of the damaged items and try to find a similar product online that are comparable to what you lost to show its value. Keep a spreadsheet to submit with your photos to the insurance.

4. Write a Detailed Incident Report

While it's still fresh on your memory, write down your statement of exactly what happened including:

  • Date and time of the incident

  • Cause of the water damage (if known)

  • What areas of your home and personal items were affected

  • Include any immediate actions you took (ie: shutting off water, calling First In Restoration, etc.)

Pro Tip: Keep a water damage journal and keep all communication with your insurance company, including claim numbers, adjuster name, details, and updates.

5. Call First In Restoration for Your Water Damage Insurance Claim

Insurance adjusters don't work for you. They work for the insurance company. This means that oftentimes they will underestimate the water damage. Having First In Restoration inspect your water damage can strengthen your claim. We provide:

  • A professional damage assessment

  • Moisture readings (including for hidden water damage)

  • A detailed PDF report with photos and repair costs
