Spring Cleaning Reminder: Don’t Overlook Hidden Water Damage

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, a fresh coat of paint, cleaning the deck furniture, clear out all that clutter and tackle deep cleaning projects. But while you’re dusting book shelves and scrubbing the kitchen floor, don’t forget to check for hidden water damage that could be hiding in places you don’t normally think to look at. If you can catch small issues now, it can prevent very costly water damage repairs later.
Where to Check for Hidden Water Damage
Water damage isn’t always obvious. Slow leaks and moisture buildup can go unnoticed for months (sometimes years!), which will lead to mold growth and home structural issues. As you go through your spring cleaning checklist make sure you check the following:
Under sinks and around appliances – Look for leaks, water stains and even water spots and warping on cabinets as well as flooring.
Ceilings and walls – Discoloration, bubbling paint and sagging drywall can all be signs of hidden moisture.
Closets, basements and crawlspaces – Musty odors and visible mold growth often indicate moisture.
Windows and doors – Check for condensation or water, which could mean poor (or old) sealing, caulking or leaks.
Sump pump – Test it (we recommend) quarterly to make sure it’s functioning properly before heavy spring rains hit.
Why Early Detection Matters
Ignoring small leaks or moisture problems can lead to expensive damage. Over time, water can weaken wood, cause mold and fungus infestations and it can even compromise your home’s foundation. If you notice any signs of water damage, address it early and it can save you thousands in repairs.
