Slow Leaks and How to Detect Them

A slow leak doesn't sound like a big deal, right? A little water here, a little water there... But you will end up with a HUGE issue over time if you don't get it repaired. Did you know that even a tiny little drip, drip, drip from your shower head or bathroom faucet (even a toilet that runs constantly) can waste more than 1,000 gallons of water a year? Not only is that a lot of wasted water, it's a lot of wasted money! Think about how many tacos or iced coffees you could buy with that savings after getting it fixed? If you decide to put it off and not repair your leak that's setting you up for the risk for potential water damage. Which is a lot more expensive than repairing a slow leak.
One of the biggest challenges with slow leaks is they go unnoticed. The water might be dripping so slowly that it doesn’t create a puddle or (noticeably) increase in your water bill right away. However, over time, these minor little issues will add up.
A leaking toilet (or commode, as your grandma would say) is a very common culprit. A toilet that runs continuously can waste several gallons of water per MINUTE. All of a sudden your water bill is through the roof, but you have no idea what's going on since there's no obvious sign.
The real trouble starts when small leaks aren't noticed for a long time. Water can sneakily creep into walls, floors and ceilings. If it's a slow leak you may not even seen signs of damage until it's too late and your ceiling is soft. Mold growth as well as structural damage will develop as water slowly continues to slowly hit that area. Water damage repair and cleanup is extremely expensive once it's spread. The quicker you locate the slow leak and have the water damage mitigated and restored the less expensive and less severe the damage will be.
It’s very important to check hidden areas. Those sneaky leaks behind walls, under floors or in the ceiling might not show up right away, but they are causing quiet (and expensive) damage. How do you check a hidden area? If you have suspicions that you have a hidden slow leak, First In Restoration can come and assess and use moisture meters and other state of the art equipment to find the leak behind your walls.
Having a professional check your plumbing for leaks is one of the best ways to prevent an expensive water bill, a lot of wasted water as well as costly water damage. This simple task will save you from a bigger headache down the road. So to recap, if you’re noticing higher-than-usual water bills or if you suspect a hidden leak and can’t find it, it’s time to call First In Restoration.
