Water is beautiful. It's necessary. It's great—until it’s flooding your home, ripping through your kitchen, soaking your new carpet or spraying like Niagara Falls from a busted pipe. Shutting off your main water shut-off valve fast during an emergency can save you from major damage as well as expensive repairs. Here’s how!
Locate Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve
Your home's main water shut-off valve is usually in one of these places:
Inside: Look in your home's basement, garage or near the water heater.
Outside: It may be near the street or even in a box underground (time to call someone)
Pro Tip: If you’re not sure where it is, find it before an emergency happens!
Turn Off the Water
Once you find the valve, turn it clockwise (remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey) to shut off the water. If it’s a lever-style valve, you will need to turn it so it’s perpendicular to the pipe.
If you can’t turn it by hand, use pliers or a wrench (Google is helpful if you don't know what you're looking for and need a visual). Stuck? Don't trust YouTube! Call First In Restoration for emergency plumbing services!
Drain the Pipes
After shutting off the water, turn on a few faucets (inside and out) to drain the leftover water. This helps relieve pressure on the pipes and prevents more leaks.
